Winter is a Painful Friend

winter is a painful friend
more a foe than ally
blowing cold a chill northwind
sending hearts awry

see the frost upon the wold
pheasants at the roadside
ice becoming cracked and old
pushing dreams aside

this the time of changing seasons
leads me by the hand
dawn’s bright cloud surveys the reason
strong beside me stands

I will walk through hill and snowfall
I will find the way
listen for the curlew’s sweetcall
lighting up the day

and when I lie down there beside you
I will feel you bring
the icemelt warmth, the changing view
the winter into spring
